This one-day course provides an introduction to solving ray tracing problems using COMSOL Multiphysics and details best practices for obtaining high quality solutions. Problem types range from introductory and classical applications taken from geometric and ray optics, to advanced topics, such as solutions adapted to low frequency (radio and microwave), and High frequency electromagnetic (EM) field propagation models. It is expected that participants will have a working knowledge of COMSOL Multiphysics before attending. AltaSim’s instructors will draw on their experience as COMSOL Certified Consultants in solving specialized energy transport problems related to RF field, wave optics, and ray tracing, to explore aspects of performing realistic analysis of EM field strength propagation and associated spatial distributions, through informal lectures, and hands-on participation, demonstrating currently available principles and practices. The course covers ray tracing problems starting with a description of ray tracing methods, and examines how to solve these problems in COMSOL Multiphysics using techniques and instruction that highlight different ways that results can depend on various physical properties of EM source and propagation environment, and as a separate problem set, including technical approaches related to importing and analyzing non-traditional model domain coverages that may involve wide area geometries, such as those found at larger, city-level mapping scales. On completion you will be knowledgeable in setting up and solving analyses of ray tracing problems using COMSOL Multiphysics.

Day 1, 8:30am – 5:00pm
An initial overview will be provided of the governing equations of electromagnetic wave propagation and the relevant material properties required for numerical analysis. Detailed consideration will be given to the selection and implementation of the relevant boundary conditions required for accurate analysis. At the end of Day 1 participants will have an understanding of the following items:
- Fundamental governing equations of electromagnetic wave phenomena
- Understanding of the simplifications of the electromagnetic wave propagation solution associated with the ray tracing methodology
- Selection of boundary conditions
- Best practices for selection of mesh refinement
- Wave propagation under a variety of situations
- Error developed in solution as a function of wavelength and geometric length scales
- Practical application of ray tracing to electromagnetic wave propagation in an urban environment
Instruction will be performed by experienced engineers who use COMSOL Multiphysics on a daily basis to solve real world problems. Among the instructors will be:

Instructor-led training tuition is fully refundable if we receive written notification (via mail or e-mail) of cancellation on or before seven business days prior to the class. Cancellations made less than seven business days prior to class will be charged 50 percent of the course tuition fee. If you fail to show up to class without written notice, you will be charged the full tuition. You may send a substitute in your place to avoid a fee.
