Objective

This one-day course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of performing analyses of AC/DC electromagnetic wave phenomena using COMSOL Multiphysics. It is expected that participants will have a working knowledge of COMSOL Multiphysics before attending. AltaSim’s instructors will draw on their experience as COMSOL Certified Consultants solving a wide range of problems on a daily basis to teach you the practical aspects of performing realistic analysis of electromagnetic problems. The course will introduce the fundamental governing Maxwell equation for electromagnetic wave propagation and how they are implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics. Participants will understand the important material properties required for accurate simulation of AC/DC electromagnetic phenomena and how they are used. The unique boundary conditions and mesh refinements required for AC/DC electromagnetic analyses will be discussed in detail. Specific application to a range of models will be presented and supplemented by demonstration for different conditions of interest to engineers developing AC/DC electromagnetic analyses. On completion you will be proficient in setting up and solving analyses of a wide range of AC/DC electromagnetic problems using COMSOL Multiphysics.

Who should attend

This course is intended for people who wish to analyze electromagnetic wave phenomena using COMSOL Multiphysics. It is expected that attendees will have an existing knowledge of the structure of COMSOL Multiphysics and will possess a relevant engineering, physics, mathematics or science background.

Day 1, 8:30am – 5:00pm

An initial overview will be provided of the governing equations of electromagnetic wave propagation and the relevant material properties required for numerical analysis. Detailed consideration will be given to the selection and implementation of the relevant boundary conditions required for accurate analysis. At the end of Day 1 participants will have an understanding of the following items:

  • Fundamental governing equations of electromagnetic wave phenomena
  • Required material properties
  • Selection of general boundary conditions for electric and magnetic field
  • Best practices for selection of mesh refinement
  • Application of infinite elements
  • Calculation of critical parameters in the analysis of AC/DC electromagnetics

Instruction will be performed by experienced engineers who use COMSOL Multiphysics on a daily basis to solve real world problems. Among the instructors will be:

Sergei Yushanov:

Sergei has over thirty years experience in computational analysis and specializes in analysis of problems relating to electromagnetic, vibration, plasma and acoustic phenomena, structural, piezo-electric, and heat transfer. As a Senior Engineer at AltaSim he has been instrumental in the development and application of multiphysics analysis to problems in the Automotive, Aerospace, Medical Products, Consumer Products, and Energy markets.

Josh Thomas:

With over four years of computational analysis experience, Josh has a graduate level training in computational mechanics modeling specializing in microstructural analysis. As a Research Engineer at AltaSim, he plays a vital role in developing solutions to a wide range of multiphysics problems using COMSOL. He has been integral to the development and teaching of both COMSOL Multiphysics and SpaceClaim courses at AltaSim.
